Home is where the closet is.
As an interior designer my playground for years was design, color and scale. Now, as a fashion stylist, I’m using many of these same elements in structuring looks for my clients. I’m still referring to my knowledge database of complementary colors and scale, only instead of a harmonious room my goal is to create a stylish outfit. Whether it’s your home or your wardrobe, it’s important for your personality to shine through.
Details are important. When I arrange accessories on a table I consider the proportions of objects to one another, balancing large and small. With an outfit those accessories could be jewelry, your purse, a belt. How do these items coordinate with your apparel? If you’re wearing a bold print, a wide belt is better than a skinny belt. If you have a dress on with a dainty floral print, a delicate necklace is best.
Sometimes change is good. You’re home might be decorated in neutral colors but in the summer you decide to add some bright, colorful pillows. Likewise your wardrobe might be considered ‘classic’ but there are days when you want to toss on something more playful, or maybe it’s a style you bring out when you’re on vacation.
Take a look at your surroundings, including your closet, what does it say about you?
